Skimming leaves, bugs, and debris off a pool's surface is one of the more tedious parts of [pool ownership](<https://www.bobvila.com/category/pools-water-features/>), but robotic pool skimmers offer a convenient, hands-free solution. These battery-powered devices float along the water’s surface, using motors and filters to collect debris before it sinks. I tested seven robotic pool skimmers to figure out which are actually worth the investment.

Pool skimmer robots vary slightly from brand to brand. Some are solar-powered and work best in consistently sunny climates, while others offer more robust cleaning power or compatibility with other robotic pool cleaners. After hands-on testing, I found that the [Betta SE Plus](<https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CVMQ3XBX/?tag=best-robotic-pool-skimmer-20>) stood out as the top performer—it was incredibly easy to set up and removed more leaves and floating debris than any other model I tried.

Whether you’re tired of daily manual skimming or just looking to cut down on pool maintenance time, a reliable robotic skimmer can make a big difference. Ahead, I break down our top picks and share what to look for when shopping for the best robotic pool skimmer.

The Betta SE Plus earned the top spot because it delivers exactly what I want from a robotic pool skimmer: simple, reliable cleaning with almost no effort required. During testing, I threw it in the pool and let it go to work collecting leaves, bugs, pollen, and pet hair from the surface. I was impressed.

Unlike some app-heavy competitors, the Betta focuses on straightforward operation rather than unnecessary extras. One of the biggest upgrades over the original Betta SE is the addition of dual-charging options. While the large solar panel handled daily charging well in the Florida sun, the included AC adapter offers extra peace of mind during stretches of cloudy or rainy weather. I also appreciated the long runtime, which allowed the skimmer to continue cleaning overnight without issue.

The debris basket is especially easy to empty thanks to its simple top-access design, and the included remote control is more useful than I expected. If I noticed a concentrated patch of leaves or bugs on one side of the pool, I could quickly steer the skimmer toward it.

I also like that the Betta SE Plus avoids overcomplicating things. Personally, I don’t think robotic skimmers really need extensive app support—they just need to reliably cruise around the pool surface and collect debris. This model does exactly that.

That said, I do have some minor concerns about long-term durability. The original Betta SE I tested last year stopped working after roughly 12 months, so I’m hopeful this upgraded version proves more reliable over time. Still, based on overall ease of use and day-to-day performance, the Betta SE Plus remains one of my favorite robotic pool skimmers I’ve tested.

The Bublue BuVortex V5 immediately stood out to me because it looks and operates completely differently from most robotic pool skimmers on the market. Instead of relying on a large solar panel floating on top, this model uses a rechargeable battery system similar to a cordless robotic pool cleaner. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about that at first, but I actually ended up appreciating the approach. Solar-powered swimming pool skimmers tend to encourage pool owners to leave them in the water 24/7, which probably doesn’t help long-term durability. Since the BuVortex V5 needs to come out for charging, I can see it potentially holding up better over time.

This skimmer also just looks cool in action. It reminded me of those large floating machines that are used to collect trash in the ocean. It cruised around the pool while pulling leaves, bugs, and floating debris into its oversized front intake. The dual-layer filtration system worked especially well during testing. Larger debris collected in the main basket while finer particles settled into the lower sponge-style filter, and everything was very easy to remove and rinse clean afterward.

I also liked the compact design, which takes up less surface space than many solar-powered competitors. Charging took roughly 4 hours from empty to full, while the battery easily lasted long enough to clean my entire pool surface. If you don’t mind removing it to recharge after use, the BuVortex V5 is a fun, effective, and competitively priced alternative to traditional solar skimmers.

The Aiper Surfer S2 feels like the premium version of the typical robot pool skimmer. A sleek design, intuitive app controls, and a smooth glide across the water surface all help it stand out from the crowd. It’s solar-powered, just like the others I tested, and it did a solid job of collecting floating debris like leaves and bugs. The app-based remote control was straightforward and easy to use once I got it working.

That said, I initially encountered some trouble connecting the skimmer to the app. I tested other Aiper products, including the brand’s [robotic pool cleaner](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/best-robotic-pool-cleaner.md>) and the Hydrocomm water tester, and those connected without issue, so this seemed like an outlier. Once I got it up and running, though, the skimmer performed well. It did occasionally get stuck when it bumped head-on into the pool wall, taking a few moments before it would steer itself free. But if you’re already an Aiper user or just want something with a polished design and premium feel, the Surfer S2 is worth a look.

**What our tester says:** “Once I got this connected to the app, it was the sleekest model I tested. App data is pretty interesting to look at, and the remote control was fun to use.”—Paul Rankin, Product Reviews tester and writer

The Beatbot iSkim was easily one of my favorite robotic pool skimmers I tested, mostly because it feels more premium than the competition. From the packaging and setup process to the app experience and overall build quality, everything feels polished and thoughtfully designed. That premium feel does come with a (slightly) higher price tag, but honestly, it’s not dramatically more expensive than many other high-end skimmers on the market.

Setup was extremely straightforward. The app paired quickly, and I especially appreciated that it automatically remembered my Wi-Fi information from other Beatbot products I’ve tested. Little touches like that make a surprisingly big difference in the overall user experience. Once in the pool, the iSkim handled day-to-day cleaning with very little attention required from me. The oversized 9-liter debris basket is super impressive—I tested this model for two months in an open-air pool with leaves, bugs, and other debris constantly blowing in, and I still only needed to empty it about once per week.

Performance was consistently strong during testing, and I liked the balance between solar-charging and long battery runtime. I typically let it skim throughout the day, then removed it at night for a quick rinse to help keep it in the best possible condition long-term. So far, it’s been excellent.

This is the robotic skimmer I plan to continue using in my own pool daily. While the price may not appeal to everyone, I think the Beatbot iSkim is easily the best premium option I tested.

The Wybot F1 strikes a nice middle ground between budget-friendly robotic pool skimmers and the more premium models I tested. The design feels more polished and has a few more features than cheaper options without pushing too far into high-end pricing territory, which is why I think it works well as a midrange pick. In fact, it reminded me quite a bit of the Aiper skimmer I tested last year, with a similar premium-ish build quality and overall feel.

Setup was quick and painless, and the app experience was solid. While I still don’t think most people necessarily need extensive app controls for a pool skimmer, I did appreciate some of the added features here—especially the remote steering controls. Being able to manually guide the skimmer toward a patch of floating leaves or bugs is useful at times. The app also allows for quick docking and battery monitoring, which adds a little extra convenience.

During testing, the Wybot F1 did a good job navigating around obstacles like pool railings and steps without constantly bumping into them or getting stuck. Its obstacle-avoidance system worked reliably, and the skimmer floated smoothly around the pool collecting leaves, pollen, bugs, and other surface debris throughout the day. The oversized debris basket also meant I didn’t need to empty it constantly.

Overall, the Wybot F1 feels like a noticeable step up from entry-level skimmers while still staying reasonably priced. If you want something with a more refined design and app support without jumping to a fully premium model, this is a great middle-ground option.

I was honestly blown away by how quick and easy the Betta SE was to install and use. It was the fastest of all the robot skimmers I tested—and setup couldn’t have been simpler. I just turned it on, tossed it into the water, and watched it zoom across the surface, scooping up leaves, bugs, and other floating debris like it was on a mission.

One of the standout features is the built-in solar panel, which keeps the skimmer running all day without needing to recharge or swap out batteries. Once it’s in the pool, it just goes, and thanks to its ultrasonic navigation, it rarely got stuck along the edges during testing. I found that it eventually covered the entire pool surface without much babysitting. Battery life was never an issue for me because I live in Florida, so it was getting all the solar power it needed. Other areas may see a dip in performance on cloudy days.

The remote control was a nice bonus too—super easy to use and perfect for when I wanted to send the skimmer toward a pile of leaves instead of waiting for it to drift over. The debris basket is generously sized and has a handy handle, so emptying it was a breeze. And with corrosion-resistant twin motors, the Betta SE works in both chlorine and [saltwater pools](<https://www.bobvila.com/articles/saltwater-pool.md>).

That said, I did run into a long-term durability issue after about 12 months of use. The rear propellers on my original test unit eventually stopped working entirely, though thankfully, it was still covered under warranty at the time. It’s something worth keeping an eye on, and I’m hopeful future versions improve overall longevity. Even so, if you want a fast, effective, and mostly hands-off pool cleaning solution, the Betta SE is still one of the best robotic skimmers I’ve tested.

| Products tested | 7 |
| Time spent testing | 2 months |
| Tests performed | 3 to 4 |
| Price range | $300 to $500 |

To find the best robotic pool skimmers, I researched more than a dozen models from well-known pool and robotics brands, focusing on performance, ease of use, durability, and overall value. I prioritized highly rated models with strong customer feedback while filtering out low-quality or unproven options. Features I compared included battery life, solar-charging capability, debris capacity, app or remote-control functionality, obstacle avoidance, and overall build quality. I also paid close attention to long-term usability factors, such as how easy each skimmer was to maintain and whether it felt durable enough for daily use.

For hands-on testing, I used each robotic skimmer in residential inground pools over multiple days, including both screened-in and open-air pool environments that regularly collected leaves, bugs, pollen, and other floating debris. I evaluated how effectively each skimmer cleaned the pool surface, how well it navigated around obstacles like steps and railings, and how often it required intervention or became stuck. I also tested setup, charging convenience, app functionality, remote controls, and how easy the debris baskets were to remove and clean. Each model was scored across these categories to determine the final rankings and identify the best robotic pool skimmers for different needs and budgets.

## What to Consider When Choosing a Robot Pool Skimmer

Robot pool skimmers can take the hassle out of cleaning your pool surface. Before buying one, it’s important to consider the specifics of your pool setup and how much debris it typically collects. Factors like pool size, the type and amount of debris, power source, and tech features can all influence how well a skimmer will work for you. Understanding these key features will help you choose the most effective and low-maintenance option for your pool.

### Pool Type and Size

The size and shape of your pool are big factors in determining which robotic skimmer will work best. Most models are compatible with both above-ground and inground pools, but some navigate better in standard rectangular pools than irregularly shaped ones. If your pool has a lot of tight corners or built-in steps, you may want a skimmer with advanced navigation to prevent it from getting stuck.

Also, consider the pool size in terms of its surface area. A larger pool requires a skimmer with good coverage and a long run time to ensure it can clean the entire surface efficiently. Luckily, most models are solar-powered, so this is less of an issue than you might think (just make sure the one you buy is also solar-powered). Faster models tend to perform better in large pools, while slower or less powerful units may be more suitable for smaller backyard pools.

### Debris and Filtration

You won’t get the same type or amount of debris in every pool. If your pool is surrounded by trees or landscaping, floating leaves, twigs, and pollen may accumulate daily. In this case, you’ll want a skimmer with a large-capacity debris basket and a fine mesh filter that can trap both large and small particles.

It's also important to consider how easy it is to empty and clean the filter. Some skimmers require pulling the whole unit out of the pool, while others have accessible baskets with built-in handles. Regularly cleaning the filter will keep your skimmer running efficiently and prevent clogs, especially during heavy debris seasons.

### Power Source

Most robotic skimmers rely on either solar panels or rechargeable batteries for power. Solar pool skimmers are ideal for sunny climates as they offer continuous operation during daylight hours without the need to recharge. However, they may struggle on cloudy days or in shady pool areas.

Battery-powered skimmers typically run for several hours on a full charge before needing to be plugged in. They can be a good fit for users who want reliable performance regardless of weather conditions. Some models offer hybrid options or quick-swap battery systems, but solar-powered skimmers remain the most eco-friendly and low-maintenance option for most users (which is why I only recommend solar-powered pool skimmers in this review).

### Navigation and Smart Features

Advanced navigation features help robotic skimmers clean your pool more efficiently and with fewer interruptions. Basic models rely on random movement, which works over time but may be slower or less precise. Higher-end skimmers utilize ultrasonic sensors or programmed patterns to avoid obstacles and cover more ground more quickly.

Smart features, such as remote controls or mobile app integration, allow users to direct the skimmer to areas with concentrated debris or monitor cleaning progress. These features aren’t essential, but they do make the experience more hands-off. They can be especially useful in larger or irregularly shaped pools. Just be sure the app connection is stable—some models are easier to pair than others.
