Approximately 1.7 million units were recently recalled across North America after discovering that attachments can unexpectedly detach from the steam cleaners and expel hot water or steam onto users during use, posing a serious burn hazard. These cleaners were sold at Target, Walmart, and other department and home goods stores nationwide and online at Bissell.com, Amazon.com, HSN.com, and other websites from October 2024 through March 2026 for between $9 and $55. Keep reading to learn how to check if you are using one of the recalled models, the safety risks involved, and what to do next to fix your unit. ## Safety Risk Identified When an attachment disconnects from the cleaner, it can expel hot water or steam directly onto the user. Bissell has received over 200 reports of hot water or steam unexpectedly escaping from the steam cleaners' attachments, including 161 reports of burn injuries, with one report of a second-degree burn. Because of these risks, Bissell and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advise consumers to immediately stop using the affected products and attachments, even if they do not appear to be defective. ![Bissel Steam Shot Recall]() *Photo: Bissell* ## Check if You Have a Defective Product To determine if your steam cleaner is part of this recall, examine the product rating label sticker on the bottom of the machine to locate the model number. The recalled units were sold in green, gray, white, blue, and dark blue colors. Depending on the model, the products include an accessory nozzle, grout brush, round detail brushes, flat scraping tool, and angle concentrator tool, and may also include an extension hose, fabric steamer, and steam squeegee. The attachments and the hose are all gray. **The affected model numbers include: 4155, 4155L, 4155W, 4155G, 4155D, 4155J, 4155Y, 4155P, 4171, 4171L, 4171W, and 4171F.** ## What to Do If You Own One of the Recalled Models If you own one of the recalled models, stop using it immediately. Gather all affected attachments and place them in your household trash. These attachments are gray in color. Once the attachments are in the trash, take a clear photo showing all the disposed attachments together inside the garbage can. Do not dispose of the cleaner itself, the water tank cap, or the measuring cup, as those parts are not affected by the recall and can be used safely while waiting for your free new attachment kit. ## How to Receive Free New Attachments To remedy this situation, Bissell is offering free replacement attachments to customers.
