Its light weight and excellent balance allowed me to sand walls and ceilings without fighting a heavy motor at the sanding head. I tested the Flex for several hours on mudded drywall wall and ceiling panels. I used it with and without the [Flex extension handle](), and connected it to my shop vacuum while sanding dried joint compound. The 9-inch rotary head left a smooth finish, and the variable-speed dial let me slow the disc when I wanted more control around transitions and feathered edges. Flex lists a speed range of 700 to 1,300 RPM, along with soft-start and constant-speed functions. ## Lightweight and Easy to Control Flex positioned the brushless motor and battery near the handle rather than placing extra weight at the sanding head. That kept the 7.3-pound tool from feeling top-heavy and made it easier to maintain even pressure against a wall or ceiling. The flexible head also pivots through 160 degrees, so it followed the sanding surface without forcing me to hold the shaft at an awkward angle. The optional extension handle proved especially useful for sanding high ceilings and reaching lower wall sections without repeatedly climbing, bending, or changing position. Even with the extra length, the sanding head remained easy to guide. It comes with a hose adapter and must be connected to a separate shop vacuum. A caveat here: The dust port on the [Flex sander]() doesn’t come with an adapter for different hose sizes, so if your hose doesn’t fit, you’ll need to use a separate adapter. Once I hooked mine up, the vast majority of the drywall dust went into my vacuum rather than drifting through the room. That alone can save considerable cleanup and reduce the amount of fine airborne dust. ## Bright Light Ring, but Installation Needs Work The optional Flex light ring illuminated the sanding surface beautifully. Its two brightness settings produce up to 800 lumens, and its battery indicator shows the remaining charge in 20-percent increments. The light made it easier to spot ridges, scratches, and uneven areas before moving on. However, I ran into a mounting problem: A lip on the ring blocked the supplied long screws, so I had to modify the ring before I could attach it. Small notches in the mounting area would likely solve the problem. Since the ring is sold separately, I did not deduct this issue from the sander’s rating. ## Best Suited to Pros and Large Projects At $899, this is primarily a professional tool. Drywall contractors and remodelers will appreciate its low weight, effective dust collection, and ability to sand large surfaces with less fatigue. An enthusiastic DIYer finishing an entire house could also justify the cost. But for occasional patching or a single-room remodel, it is more tool than most homeowners need. It performs its core job exceptionally well, and the protective soft case—with its strong construction and heavy zipper—is good enough that I’ll use it for both storage and transport.
