I finally got a chance to try one out just before hurricane season started, and I’ve been using it ever since. Read on as I share my notes regarding the functionality, durability, and other pros and cons of this [emergency preparedness]() multi-tasker. ## - **Enhanced power and charging capabilities.** The ER310 Pro boosts battery capacity to 10,000 mAh and adds a USB-C port, extending playback time and enabling device charging. - **Superior reception and sound quality.** It offers clear NOAA frequency reception and good sound quality, outperforming cheaper models. - **Bluetooth adds everyday utility.** While not essential for emergencies, Bluetooth allows for streaming, enhancing daily use. - **Reliable emergency features.** The flashlight and robust build make it a dependable choice for emergency preparedness. **Bottom line:** The Midland ER310 Pro is a versatile, reliable emergency radio with significant upgrades, making it a worthwhile investment for both emergency and everyday use. ## NOAA Reception and Everyday Usability The Midland ER310 Pro is an upgraded version of the older [ER310 I reviewed]() in the past, and they share nearly identical dimensions, weight, and layout. Both models include AM/FM and NOAA weather radio bands. Both incorporate a backlit LCD and a CREE LED flashlight with an emergency strobe feature. Both include solar, hand crank, and USB charging ports. Like the earlier model, the [ER310 Pro]() gets better reception than the cheap ($30 to $40) ones I’ve tried, similar to pricier models in the $150 to $200 range. It picks up two NOAA frequencies with good clarity in the same location where the cheap ones struggled to get one. I’ve also been able to tune into nearly as many AM and FM frequencies as on my truck radio. The sound quality is good for the size and price. It seems to be optimized for clear transmission of spoken words, which is great for hearing the robotic NOAA voice. The flashlight shines a high or low focused beam that functions as a spotlight rather than an area/floodlight. I have other primary light sources for emergencies, but this is a handy backup. The boxy shape and size of the radio make it awkward to grip like a traditional flashlight, but it does the job in a pinch. The new model eliminates the AA battery compartment and increases built-in battery capacity from 3,500 mAh to 10,000 mAh. It also replaces the one-way micro-USB port with a bi-directional USB-C port. Those upgrades do two very helpful things: increase radio playback time from 45 hours up to 200 hours and allow the unit to double as a portable charger for cell phones or other small devices. Another major upgrade, the addition of Bluetooth, is less helpful in emergency situations, but makes the unit more functional for everyday use. I like having the ability to stream a podcast while I’m doing chores in the basement, but would want to preserve my batteries (in both devices) if the power goes out. Whether you simply want to stay informed while waiting out a storm at home, or if you’re looking for a dependable multi-tasker to pack in your evacuation go-bag, the [Midland ER310 Pro]() may be your best option. Cheaper hand-crank radios struggle with reception or include less important add-ons at the cost of the most important function: NOAA frequency reception. Not so with this one. It delivers on the basic requirement and builds on it with additional value.
