My family spends a lot of time on our deck, and even when fall evenings start getting chilly, we still find ourselves wanting to be out there. To extend our [outdoor living](<https://www.bobvila.com/category/outdoor-living/>) window, we've traditionally kept a basket of blankets available by the door and a stack of wood ready by the fire pit. But since building a fire isn't always convenient, and huddling under a throw isn't always sufficient, it's not long before we're back inside—enjoying our gas fireplace and worrying about the added energy cost only after the bill arrives.

Once we got it set up, [Timber Stoves' Scout tabletop pellet heater](<https://bbqguys.sjv.io/c/264145/971168/12853?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbqguys.com%2Fi%2F3219182%2Ftimber-stoves%2Fscout-25000-btu-pellet-tabletop-patio-heater-portable-wpphsc1-0>) provided the perfect solution to our cold-weather woes. After spending many an evening over the last month enjoying eye-level fires that start in just a few seconds, here's what we love about the unit and what you deserve a warning on before you buy your own.

##

- **Effortless warmth for outdoor evenings.** The Timber Stoves Scout provides quick, eye-level fires, extending outdoor living into chilly nights.
- **Challenging assembly, but worth it.** Initial setup was tricky, but the heater's performance and charm make it worthwhile.
- **Safe and sturdy design.** The weighted base keeps it stable, even with pets around, though supervision is advised for children.
- **Easy maintenance.** Features like an ash collection tray simplify cleanup, making it user-friendly.

**Bottom line:** The Timber Stoves Scout is a stylish, effective solution for outdoor warmth, offering ease of use and maintenance despite initial setup challenges.

## Powerful Wood-Pellet Heat

Before we started testing the [Scout](<https://bbqguys.sjv.io/c/264145/971168/12853?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbqguys.com%2Fi%2F3219182%2Ftimber-stoves%2Fscout-25000-btu-pellet-tabletop-patio-heater-portable-wpphsc1-0>), we definitely had our reservations. In a home with two high-energy dogs and a revolving door of teenagers, was it even safe to have a wood pellet stove on our picnic table? Then there was assembly, which was challenging at first. The instructions weren’t super clear, so we struggled to get the chimney to fit over the main chamber. We ended up using a flat-head screwdriver to nudge open the gap that runs the length of the chimney, and that provided the fraction of an inch it needed to slide on. We also weren’t sure whether to insert the self-tapping screws to keep everything connected (the instructions said yes, but an online video we found implied no—we went with yes). Even getting the pellets to light took a few tries, but once we added a couple of small pieces off some [GreenSpark fire starters](<https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FPQVLFH/>) we had, they took right off.

The good news is that once we got that first fire lit, our worries were a thing of the past. The Scout has an absolutely charming aesthetic, and we quickly fell in love with its functionality as well. The viewing window is perfect for watching your own tiny fire while you share a meal or play a game, and once it’s cranking, it puts out impressive warmth over about a 5-foot radius. We actually got too hot the first night we used it (early evening temps were still in the low 60s), but all we had to do was stop adding pellets from the hopper, and it slowly died down on its own.

## Safety and Maintenance

Beyond its impressive heat, the [Scout tabletop pellet heater](<https://bbqguys.sjv.io/c/264145/971168/12853?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbqguys.com%2Fi%2F3219182%2Ftimber-stoves%2Fscout-25000-btu-pellet-tabletop-patio-heater-portable-wpphsc1-0>) features a rugged design that’s clearly built to last. While we weren’t sure it would be safe to have a tall wood pellet stove up off the ground, the weighted base has kept it rock-solid and stable no matter how many times our dogs have crashed into the table. I definitely wouldn’t leave small children unsupervised around an appliance like this, but that’s standard for any fireplace or fire pit.

Upkeep has been a pleasant surprise as well. The dedicated ash collection tray makes cleanup quick and easy—you just dump the cooled ash between uses to keep air flowing freely through the chamber and add fresh pellets to the hopper. After enjoying at least a dozen fires over the past few weeks, the stainless steel body has taken on a pretty purple-and-brown patina in many places, and I've simply wiped off any soot that’s collected inside the viewing window with a dry paper towel. All this to say, if I had to assemble it all over again to get to where I am today, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
