The Titan series is Toro’s top tier of residential zero-turn mowers and includes serviceable components and controls that are similar to commercial mowers. During a 2-month test, I experienced the impressive [lawn mowing]() performance and comfortable ride firsthand. Having previously tested a [Toro TimeCutter MyRide](), I wanted to understand the difference between that platform and the bigger, stronger Titan Max. Both are built on stout 10-gauge steel frames with 10-gauge steel mowing decks, but Toro uses grade 50 hardened steel in the Titan series to boost durability. The Titan Max is equipped with a 747cc, 26-horsepower Kohler engine, compared to the 708cc, 24.5-horsepower Toro Commercial engine on the TimeCutter that I tested. The added horsepower translates to faster mowing speed—up to 9 miles per hour compared to TimeCutter’s 7 miles per hour. Titan Max also features larger wheels (23-inch drive wheels and 13-inch casters) than TimeCutter (18-inch drive wheels and 11-inch casters). Equipped with a 60-inch mowing deck, the Titan Max weighs 876 pounds. All of that size and power translated to an extremely competent mowing performance. With a blade tip speed just over 18,900 feet per minute, the deck produced ample airflow for a crisp, clean cut on thick zoysia and bermuda grass as well as weedy areas, and discharged the clippings across a 30-foot swath. I especially liked the wide range of mowing heights: from 1.5 inches to a full 5 inches. The higher mowing heights are perfect for fields and natural areas that only need to be cut a couple of times during the growing season. Pro-control steering dampers give it excellent responsiveness without being jarring, and the straight-ahead speed combined with the 60-inch-wide deck allow it to cover up to 4.9 acres per hour. However, the tires could be a bit too aggressive on some terrain, and operators particularly need to be aware of the deep tread on the steering tires. On a few fast, sharp turns on damp ground, the drive wheels sent turf flying, leaving muddy tire tracks in the lawn. But with average caution, the steering system seemed to minimize the risk. Most residential-grade [zero turn mowers]() are somewhat smaller and slower than average commercial models, but the Titan Max bridges the gap fairly well without breaking the bank. I appreciated the pro-style drop-pin system to adjust the cutting height and the deck lift pedal for fast, accurate adjustments and easy transport. I also like that Toro packs numerous robust details into this retail-ready model that are often reserved for dealer-exclusive products. Examples include hardened steel construction, a deep-padded 23-inch high-back seat with armrests, seat belt, roll over protection (ROPS), removable floor pan, and bright LED headlights. Anyone with larger acreage will appreciate the huge 7-gallon gas tank for extended use between fill-ups.
