Distressing Wood Beams

Project: Malibu Beach House, Episode 10, Part 1

After catching up with a progress report in Malibu, Bob demonstrates how to "distress" woodwork to make it look antique. This technique is used on interior exposed beams, as well as on the massive California-Spanish front door, which Bob shows how to hang. Last, Bob goes shopping for tile at Elon Tile, a local L.A. showroom.
Part 1: Distressing Wood Beams
Juan Santos shows Bob how to distress the new Douglas Fir ceiling beams so they look like they're hundreds of years old. By using standard construction tools in an artistic form, Santos can even add the appearance of termite damage.
Part 2: Shopping for Tile
Bob Vila transforms a California beach house on stilts into an elegant Spanish-style villa, worthy of its glamorous location—Malibu. Projects include an elegant winding staircase, a state-of-the-art sprinkler system, environmentally friendly blown-in cellulose insulation, and seismic code compliance.
