Colonel Samuel Taylor Suit broke ground at what is now Berkeley Castle with the intention of making it his and his wife's personal retreat . He died, however, in 1888, before construction could be completed. He left a great fortune to his young wife, Rosa, payable on condition that she finish the house, which she did hastily, a fact evidenced by the marks of low-quality workmanship in the portions of the house built after Suit's death. With her inheritance in hand, Rosa lived lavishly and beyond her means, which led to her selling the Castle at public auction within years of its construction.
