Bathrooms are small rooms, but they require lots of attention to detail—and great lighting.
Listen to BOB VILA ON VANITY LIGHTING or read the text below:
Finishes and fixtures should be seen as a whole, whether you choose polished chrome, brushed nickel, oiled bronze or any other finish. Vanity lighting fixtures should complement, not compete with, your faucet and hardware.
Single sconces at eye-level on either side of the mirror (three or more feet apart) are most popular with lighting designers because they cast an even light on your face in the mirror. Single source overhead, or “can”, lighting, can cast unflattering shadows.
Colored or coated bulbs designed to shed face-flattering light are a great idea, and if glare bothers you, avoid bulbs that are exposed or crystal-clear. Bathroom lighting is really task lighting and should be strong enough to get the job done, but a dimmer switch allows you to focus on the details as much or as little as you want. After all, they don’t call it a vanity for nothing.
