We are in southern Ontario and are looking at windows. My husband insists that aluminum windows are the way to go. I am leaning towards vinyl or aluminum clad windows. I am worried about the heat/cold transfer and the condensation. He is worried that the vinyl in the long term is not as durable. Suggestions.

We had energy star windows, Toronto install our windows after talking with 3 of my neighbors who highly recommended them. It was a smooth process, great product and very professionally installed. I did do a little shopping around before signing the contract. They have provided all info and quote straight away with no hidden costs to follow. I was so happy with the process that I have also asked for my doors to be replaced. I would highly recommend them.

NO way would I want an aluminum window.
The finish may fail(I've seen a few do that) they tend to transfer the cold to the inside.
The finish can be scratched off.
In the past I've had to replace all the windows in whole houses that had clad windows.
Water had gotten in behind the cladding and rotted out the lower casings.
Some were Anderson and some where Pella, both would do nothing because it was out of warranty.

Talking about durability, vinyl windows will not crack, are highly scratch resistant and will not dent easily. On the other hand aluminum windows are prone to dents but have the other properties of vinyl like being scratch resistant if the surface is painted or powder-coated. While vinyl windows are not as strong as the aluminum ones they are corrosion free. The same cannot be said of aluminum windows. .
The choice is yours...

These two types of windows have mostly same features. Aluminum windows are durable, you can have it in different finishing options and they also very affordable. Before choosing your windows find out what type of windows is approved by the city and your homeowners association. You can get here a lot of useful information about pros and cons of different types of windows.

Choose vinyl windows for energy efficiency and low maintenance. Choose aluminum windows if you like the look or are concerned with the strength of the window. Aluminum windows are also somewhat lighter. Both options are quite durable. In general, most people seem to choose aluminum windows, but either choice is a good one. Good luck!
