My 7 year old electric water heater doesn't drain water from the lower valve. Someone said to get a piece of metal and shove it into the drain to dislodge any blockage.

My father inlaw says, to shut off the supply the expansion tank, open the bathroom and kitchen sink, and blow air into the valve.

What are your thoughts.

Get rid of it as it is 7 years old and the reason the valve is blocked is sediment blocked the opening as this tank was NOT flushed as directed by the manufacturer.

Sediment robs you of energy as does calcium and other mineral deposits.

Putting a wire or other metal through the valve is a great idea..... if one likes to be scalded or possibly damaging the valve so it cannot shutoff and one just stares as the tank empties and floods the area.

Would this same person tell you to place metal into an electrical outlet to test it to see if it is alive or hold it in a flame to see how long you can hold it?

RE father in law how hard can he blow PSI?

Thanks for your help, I will tell the wife we must replace the water heater before something drastic happens.

One of the main reasons to replace it if the blow down valve at the bottom is clogged I would imagine the T&P is in the same condition and this is a dangerous condition.

Good luck
