I have just removed some old lino tiles from a concrete floor. I have been left with a tar-like substance with an unpleasant smell and it is causing nose and eye irritation. It has the irritation quality of mineral spirits. How can I deal with this? Can I seal it? Will it cure now that it is out in the open? To scrap it up is hard, and the more I scrap the more it stinks. I want to cover this area with sisal, wall to wall. Help, its making us sick.

if you have plenty of ventilation, you can remove it with a stripper or xylene. If it is thick, go to Home Depot and ask to rent an eddy floor scraper. Xylene will make it come up easier with the eddy, but if you do not have good ventilation DO NOT use xylene-- very dangerous fumes if not ventilated-- can cause flash fires.
