I have two questions/situations that are related to humidity and ventilation. First, I believe I have a problem with moisture in my crawlspace. There are a few spots where the mortar has deteriorated in the cinder block foundation on the side of the house that gets hit by storms the most. I have placed two humidity sensors in the crawlspace and have been monitoring them. The levels remain under 50% on dry days but increase on rainy days. The levels haven't exceeded 70%. I'm looking into repairing the spots on the wall. But, what can I do to prevent/reduce moisture in the crawlspace. I'm getting very wide opinions on how to address the problem from different companies.

My second question relates to the attic. The roof is about 18 years old. There are no visible signs of leaks but I have a temp. and humidity sensor in the attic. The attic heats up quite a bit on a sunny days. For example, one day the house was 71 degrees, the attic was 94 and the outside it was 61. Is that normal? I'm in Atlanta, Ga. I've been hearing popping and cracking noises that suggest there is something contracting and expanding with the weather. More so, on days where the temp. changes drastically. It happens more in the fall and winter and subsides in the spring and summer. And, it always happens near the furnace in the attic and around the time of sunset and sunrise. The sounds come from the same side of the house mentioned above.

Is moisture getting trapped in the crawlspace and heat in the attic. Is moisture rising through the walls and getting into the attic. Is the attic heating up too much and needs better insulation and/or ventilation.

Any assistance would help. Thank you for your time.

I have some similar questions about our crawl space. I have heard that we should have gravel put down on top of the dirt floor and then put the plastic vapor barrier over that. Have you tried that yet- that is, if you have a dirt floor crawl space?

The attic issue heating up so much makes me wonder if you should have an attic fan running off a thermostat.
