Bob Vila Radio: Integrated Pest Management
To control garden pests without using toxic chemicals, work with nature, not against it.

Knowing what insect pests look like at every stage of their development and checking for them often is much better for you and your environment than blanketing your yard with toxic pesticides.
It’s not really worth using toxic chemicals just before harvest, for instance, to kill bugs that are eating plants whose fruit you’re about to eat.
You can physically control pests with traps, small vacuums, hose sprayers or just tweezers. Barriers like fences, netting and trunk guards can help keep birds, small animals or insect pests off your harvest. For crawling insects and slugs, a border of diatomaceous earth can do the trick, and it doesn’t hurt anyone but them.
When your garden is being attacked by aphids, beetles and grubs, order up some predator insects like lacewings, ladybugs, or nematodes, and let nature fight your battles!
