We recently bought the house I have ALWAYS wanted its from the 1890's and has been updated some but needs some work as well, one of the major issues is the moisture problem in the basement, there is alot of mold on the dirt floor and its just very damp down there, in the back of the basement some of the supports show signs of water damage because of this, The home inspector told us we ought to put down a moisture barrier, and possibly cover over that with concrete, I was wondering if anyone has experince with this and what the exact steps would be to taking care of this probem myself instead of paying somone to come in and do it for me. Would just laying some tarps down do the job? or do I need to do more than that?
It sounds like you have totally unfinished space. You can just put dowm 6 or 8 mill plastic and weight it down so it doesn't move around with old bricks or sand bags. There is another vapour bar product that is black and is reinforced like rip stop fabric in tents. It is not as slippery as palstic to walk on.
Before placing it, kill or remove the mold, wearing a respirator. Some mold spores are toxic. You could use a garden sprayer and mix water and chlorine at ten to one. Maintain fresh air source.
