We're having an inspection done prior to closing. Anything specific we should have him do to check this out?

1954 Ranch House...Is that Asbestos?
In process of purchasing new house...We looked in the attic and found a white and brown material that looks like it had been "blown" in throughout the attic as insulation. Any idea what this might be?
Hi Seiche,
You're a busy person on the BBS !!!
Have the material tested. If it's POSITIVE, negotiate w/the current owner for 1/2 or total removal. Either way, hire a Real Estate Attorney so he/she can set up an escrow account. Your Inspector should be able to give an estimate. If you're not sure, have the homeowner have 3 Abatement companies give you estimates.
You're on the right track by hiring a Home Inspector (hopefully, ASHI-approved). Now hire a Real Estate Attorney.
My best to ya and hope this helps.

Sounds like vermiculite which is non-asbestos and was used during the period as insulation.

Actually I need to correct myself here. Vermiculite 'might' contain asbestos depending upon where it was mined. Here is a helpful link:

Received this today from the EPA and thought it might be of interest to those with more interest regarding vermiculite as attic insulation.
