I bought a filing cabinet at a yardsale and in the process of transporting it home...the button on the top pushed out and now the drawers are locked. The lady I bought it from had told me she couldnt find the key and I didnt plan on locking the cabinet anyhow ...just wanted to file all my bills, etc....hey it was 5 bucks!!! and its a steel or metal 3 drawer tall filing can I take the lock off of one of these or is there a easy way to open it? Thanks...Penny

PennyB1970 - hi, if the button is out the unit should be unlocked. If the button's out, then something else is causing the lockout condition, such as the locking bars coming loose from the lock.

The locks on those cabinets are fairly easy for a locksmith to bypass or "pick" open. Or, if you're handy with a drill, you can drill it open since you said you didn't plan to lock it. The last time I drilled one of these open, I used a bit about twice as wide as the opening for the key. Start slow so the bit doesn't snap/break while it's starting to do its job. Expect the drill to "jump" around a bit until it gets a good start. I drilled in at the top of the key opening so I'd get closest to the wafers and springs (those locks don't normally use pins). Once I was done, I used tweezers to remove the pieces of wafers and springs and the lock opened up.

Removing the lock afterwards wasn't too hard. I had to remove the drawer closest to the lock so I could get in behind the lock and detach it from the locking bars that secured the drawers. Depending on how the locking bars work, you may have to remove them, or find a way to secure them open. (I've had to do this before on another cabinet.)

I hope this gives you an idea and a couple options. Good luck! Jim D/Heathsville, VA
