We had some water damage into our almost finished basement, from an overflowing toilet. My question is how severe a problem is this? It seems focused around 1 recessed light and 2 other smaller areas. Is mold going to be a problem? What is the best way to get the damage "fixed" and to dry the area? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi Tracie,

It kinda depends on how bad it was.

In general, "one time" water damage is preferable to long term damage. Since this sounds like an isolated event, that should be hopeful news.

Insurance companies call in water damage mitigation contractors to set up fans, etc, to dry out damaged areas. You may be able to contact such experts on your own (to avoid the insurance claim).

At minimum, I would expose the area (remove ceiling) and let dry thoroughly.

Hopefully you'll get some feedback on the issue from some pros. If not, try some other forums as well...please post a picture if possible. good luck!

Regards,
