Freezing up is usually caused by low charge. Have it serviced.

also you make sure the unit is set into the window at an angle so that it drains properly.

Freezing of the coils could be a number of things. You need to have the coils( not just the filter) cleaned at least once a year. You also need to check you thermostat setting to make sure your compressor is cycling correctly. Don't always "assume" that the unit is low on refidgerant.

Complete frosting (white, snow-like substance) of the evaporator (cooling) coil is either caused by running the unit when inside or outside air temperature is below 70°F (most common) or poor air flow. If running it at night when temperatures fall, turn the thermostat to one of its lowest settings.

Poor air flow could be caused by a dirty filter, plugged evaporator coil, loose fan blade, motor turning too slow, curtains or other obstacles directing the cold air directly back into the A/C.

If the unit were short of refrigerant, the evaporator coil would only *partially* frost.
