When installing an appliance with a compresser such as air conditioner or refrigerater how long should you let it sit before running it?

Hi,
As long as the appliance was not layed down before the installation or shipped on it's side it should be safe to plug it in right away.
If the appliance was shipped/layed down before arriving at it's location, a good rule of thumb is to leave the unit in it's normal uprite position at least the same amount of time that it was sideways/layed down before plugging it in. This would allow the oil to drain back into the compressor before running the unit.
