I entered a contract with a local roofing company, after getting two estimates, for a roofing job. The final bill included charges for 14.5 additional hours @ $40per hour for replacing 3 sheets of OSB, renailing the decking, and $50 for nails to renail decking. I am thinking that a roofer with 20 years experience would know at the time of estimate that the decking would be renailed. Is roofer attempting to take advantage - or should I just pay the man?

You can never tell what you will find until you start the work. The amount he is charging you is very reasonable. Pay the man and thank him for doing a proper job.

In my roofing contracts, there is a specific clause stating that the estimate is based on what we were able to see during the inspection, and additional work may become necessary once the old roof and flashings are removed.

I just received 5 different contracts from different roofers. Some had very detailed contract proposals and charged per square foot for roof deck repair. Others left it off the contract, but agreed when questioned that there very well could be additional cost. Some charged per board replaced.

A roof deck could easily add a large portion to the cost estimate, but if they find a problem you want it fixed!!

I've also found not all proposals for work included fully stripping the roof or the dumpster cost to haul away stripped materials.

so ask and learn as much as you can be before beginning the job.

At this point I'ld say pay the guy. It sounds reasonable.
