I have an attic over an attached 2 car garage that I would like to make usable. The roof is currently supported by W (Fink) trusses made of 2x4 lumber spaced 24" apart. Would it be possible to attach 2x8 bottom and top cords to the existing rafters and remove the web rafters thus opening up the space. This seems feasible to my non engineering mind but I still have a problem in how to install a ridge board or would one even be necessary. I am trying to figure how to increase the space without removing the roof. Any thoughts?

The project will require a complete roof rebuild. The disruption of the engineered truss and replacement with new structural components requires a permit, and engineering review. You cannot simply sister structural lumber onto a truss, then remove the supporting webs. In my opinion, it would be far easier to remove the old roof, build a conventional rafter frame and attach a new roof deck and shingles than to try to work under the existing deck.

You will need to start with a design plan and permits.
