We are in the process of having our new home framed. We selected double pane vinyl windows with Low-E glass. Our builder and his supplier feel that Low-E glass isn't necessary. Living in the south makes me ask, "Is 1/2" insulated glass good enough? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Low-e glass cuts down on solar radiation, I live in the pacific NW and it is used quite a bit up here. As far as spacing in glass 1/2" is good enough, but you may want to look into triple wall. Also check into fiberglass frames they will cost you double but they are also twice the window that vinyl windows are.
Remember you are at the point to put in the best you can afford, do not skimp on windows, doors or insulation, floor coverings, etc. you may think you are saving money now, but it will cost at least double if you go to upgrade in a few years.

Do not skimp on south & west facing windows. In fack, the newer "E Squared" insulated glass is even better. Want to keep that heat out in southern climates. Will pay for themselves over time and also cuts down on UV exposure

Despite what DH says, the fiberglass windows have had problems and some mfgs. have discontinued them. One of the largest installers in our area no longer will touch them because of the problems.
