We live in a nice neighborhood, renting from a man who uses his homes as cash cows. No interest in upkeep from him, and the exterior double doors of the home are the most unsightly I've ever seen. I have to do SOMETHING with them, but don't know what. Each door did have old raised, plastic, yellowed, cracked and broken decorative coverings (even WORSE!), so we removed them only to uncover about 100 holes in the metal doors. Trying to get these holes filled with bondo and smoothed out in the dead of winter is really impossible, and it's getting very depressing to pull into the driveway. Any ideas? I even bought NEW front doors when I caught some on sale, but the landlord says they won't work, because the doorjambs were never built correctly. Oh, won't someone please give me an idea???

It's awfully tough to reply without seeing them, but here's a possible idea.
Get some wood veneer, trim it to the size of the doors, use adhesive to attach it. Then put on a good quality outdoor varnish.

First of all, be sure the owner of the property will let you do whatever you want.

I get the feeling that as long as he is not paying for it, it's not a problem.

Take a photo of it first and then when you pay the rent, get a written OK. It may come in handy when it comes time to get your deposit back!

I like the idea of covering the door if you can't paint it to look good.

I would not spend alot of money fixing this place up. The owner is not interested in fixing it up or he would have. I'm sure there are going to be more surprises for you down the road, don't get him in the habit of you paying to fix the place.

Good luck,
