I want to replace a single window with a French door; the wall is 8-inch block. Since there will still be 1-3 courses of block above the newly enlarged opening, what do I need to do for a header? I'm guessing wood framing isn't an option.

How big is the door?window?

Will the french door fit into the window width opening......and the existing height(after demo).........?

There is a header already in place above the window

No, I should have mentioned that the door is a double, about 5 or 6 feet wide, so the existing window header won't be reusable. So the question is, what's standard practice for this situation? I could fit a new concrete or steel I-beam header, but I'm not sure how to install it from the side such that it's a snug fit up/down. Can it simply be shimmed with metal plates once in place?
