A neighbor house has been foreclosed and is owned by the bank. It's in bad shape and there is an ugly, rusty old mailbox in front with a rotten post. Presumably, no mail goes there anymore. Would it be ok to take it down and put on the porch or throw it away? Or if not would it be ok to slap a coat of paint on it?

Just wondering because I know it's illegal to tamper with the mail.

Taking it down would almost certainly be risky for you as this may be considered a form of property damage. You should be able to find out what bank and contact by looking through real estate records to ask for permission to paint the post/box, but honestly the safest thing to do is not look at it. Unless you can find some city ordinance being broken you are risking trouble for yourself messing with it.

If you do find something in city code be sure to report it and let the city take care of it. As annoying as it is it’s a good thing that we have rights that are respected as a property owners.
