Hey Bob;
All of what you said about spiders is correct ,but before you go the chem route try this. It works on most varmints including mice and snakes. Get a hold of some fresh aromatic cedar chips or saw dust put them in a ladies nylon hose tie both ends of a section of the hose and hang where ever you have a varmint problem. They will all leave the area. The proof is; have you ever seen a woodpecker on a cedar tree ants or anything else. Those varmints can't stand the odor of cedar. Try it.
