I am looking at buying a 1 1/2 story 1963 house and when I was looking at it the owner showed me how some of the cinder blocks were crumbling. The owner (who is the fourth owner of this house and the first two have since passed) said that he was told there is a full concrete wall behind the cinder blocks that is the actual foundation and that the cinder blocks were put in just for looks. He did admit that he has never tried to clear any of the crumbling blocks away to look and see if there is another foundation wall and I didn't think it was my place to do so on the first visit to the house. Anyway, have you ever heard of what I call a double basement wall for any reason other then structural problems? And, since there is one cinder block that is over 3/4 gone and another 3 or 4 that are crumbling quite bad too, how structurally sound is this house? You can also see several other cinder blocks that have signs of efflorescence on other walls in the basement.

I know my stuff when it comes to building and renovating homes and to me this is a fairly serious problem but I do tend to go way overboard when it comes to structural support. I am going to get a qualified home inspector as well as concrete contractor to come and look at the house before I even think of putting an offer on it but I would like to hear what you have to say.

Thank you,
