We live in a new house built in 2013. Over the last year, we have noticed a fishy smell when the windows are open. This fishy smell also seems to be on our dishes, but only when the windows are open. We first believed it was our dishwasher, but after thoroughly cleaning our filter, sanitizing, etc., we still got the smell. As it is winter and we open our windows less frequently, we noticed the smell went away. As a test, we will open our windows periodically and sure enough, the smell reappears. Any ideas?

I feel like I'm losing my mind and then I saw a question you posted about dishes smelling when windows and doors are open. I have that problem too!!!! Here's what I have figured out at my house.

I took a clean, non-smelling plate and set it on the counter. I opened the kitchen window and a few minutes later the plate was pungent. I thought it must have something to do with the air. So the next day, I took a clean, non-smelling plate outside and set it on the picnic table. Within minutes the smell was overwhelming.

So I tried a bunch of different stuff. It is not related to our water or dishwasher because I bought a new plate to try. Same problem. It also happens to different brands of dishes. I don't know what to do. We have to use all plastic to eat and drink on the deck and we can't open our windows.

This seems crazy to me and my husband thought I was being silly so I repeated the experiments with him present. Same results.

Our thanksgiving was ruined by this last year. The kitchen window was opened and all the serving bowls, plates, glasses, etc smelled so strong we couldn't eat.

I'm desperate for help so I thought I would reach out to you.

I think it has to be something in the air or soil. I don't know who to call for help. If you have any thoughts or ideas you would like to share with me, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you for reading this.
