Our house has popcorn ceilings and has cracks or splits that run across the ceiling in several rooms running longways across the house. They run in straight lines and in many places look like the lines are tape coming loose or something because they are completely straight.

The bathroom has a crack that runs across its roof as well, but it has a smooth texture ceiling that may just be painted drywall, the crack in that room is a little more jaggedy looking.

My question is can the cracked areas just be repaired, and maybe the whole ceiling be painted to mask the area or would the whole popcorn ceiling need to be replaced?

There is no need to replace ceiling. The only thing you have to do is just fill the cracks. There are several products in the market for filling cracks in a proper way.

I think you should try this:

Hope it works for you!
