My one story home has drywall ceilings and I notice in some of the rooms, the joists are protruding through. I can actually feel where the joists are. What causes this? Is it a serious condition?

The ceilings are only a few years old.

cielings should have 1/2" or 5/8" drywall, enough that you would not be able to feel anything through them.

I can only imagine from here, but based on your description, the builder used thinner dryweall, or it has gotten damp since then for some reason
