Hey there,

My gas water heater stays on pilot but will not "flame up" to heat the water. I can turn the temperature knob and the flames will fire up and heat the water. As soon as the water has reached the desired temperature it will cut back down to the pilot light and will not come back on to reheat the water whenever needed. It just stays on pilot all the time. Please help, do not want to replace the whole water heater.

Sounds like the control is bad. Most manufacturers use the same brand name control (Unitrol) A qualified plumber makes this repair. You can check out www.bradfordwhite.com You can't buy a new water heater without new ANSI safety devices now. These new safety features increase the cost by around $100.00. When you are on bradfordswhites site click on the link "DEFENDER" they will explain how they work.

Plumbers and others told me that a thermostat replacements costs nearly as much as a new heater. So I opted for a new heater with a pilotless ignition which I really like because I don't have to worry about the pilot light going out and building up gas near the heater.
