Help! We're changing the microwave/exhaust to a vent hood, and are relocating the microwave (new one, the old is too big) too, (hopefully if we can find a small yet large microwave. We can't use built-in kits since the island width is 48", depth 24".

Can anyone suggest the dimensions of a nook or opening to place the unit in? We've seen a number of pictures in the latest kitchen designs showing microwaves used this way.

All suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

The bigger the better as k2 suggested, they need room for air to circulate around them to cool the inner components or else it will likely lead to premature failure. An alternative would be to purchase (if you haven't already) a microwave designed to be built-in as they usually vent trough the front.

BTW. Gallery photos do not always show appliances the way that are intended to be installed. I've even seen photos at a manufacturer's web site showing a fridge and freezer practically built in whereas their installation instructions clearly stated they need at least 1-2" of free space around them.

JFYI
