Hi all!
My Kenmore 90 Series Washer works fine up until it comes to the Drain and Spin cycle; it suddenly won't drain at all, and won't go into spin. It works fine during the normal part of the cycle.
There's a low hum BRIEFLY during the part after agitation but before drain from the timer. I'm not SURE if the timer is the issue, though it doesn't matter where I put it (which of the spin cycles) as to what it does; it just stops during the spin cycle and does not advance when it gets to the point it should drain.
Any pointers on how to fix, or at least diagnose, my washer? Thanks!
One thing I did find is that there are reports that the washer's lid open switch could cause this; that the machine can fill and agitate but won't drain or spin if the lid's switch is broken.
If that's what the consensus is for what my problem is, then how do I remove the body to replace the switch?

I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number ("90 Series" isn't it).
You can find tips for locating the model number identification tag on your appliances in the 'Repair Parts' section of my web site linked below.
** [the timer] just stops [before] the spin cycle and does not advance when it gets to the point it should drain. **
** there are reports that the washer's lid open switch could cause this **
Yes it could.
** how do I remove the body to replace the switch? **
That will depend on the model number of the washer and how it was designed.

That is a Whirlpool built 'direct drive' (aka beltless) model. You can see how to access its internal components at the following link:

Thanks DanO.
That let me get to the part. Now I need to go to the store and get the replacement; luckily, there's a Whirlpool parts place a mile and a half from my home (coincidentally, owned by a former coworker of mine).
I'll post back if that fixes it, or if it doesn't, I'll have better questions to ask.

Your instructions were exactly what I needed to see how to open the washer up, get to the switch, replace it, and close back up. I didn't even get it finished before the washer started draining the residual water out of the basket when I closed the door after connecting the switch up.

Hi Judy!
While looking for answers to this before DanO hit it on the head, I found this thread, and your question reminded me of it. It sounds much closer to your problem.
Sounds like a bit more work than my (simple!) fix turned out to be, after I got the right info, but it should be fixable.

In case anyone reads this it IS the safety switch. try putting something on the plunger on the lid to extend it (make it longer) Worked perfectly when we did. SIGH........
Mine will also stop at the rinse and spin cycle. in order for me to make it continue is if i disconnect from the wall mount for 5 to 30 minutes, connect it again and start it up once more. Yet that doesn't work all the time. what do you think is wrong? what do i do?

the washer will not drain, at one point the lid was open and it still moved back and forth (agitate) but will not drain with lid close or open. check the hose clear of debris up to the machine, when unplug hose at bottom of machine water flowed out

I have a 80 Series direct drive Kenmore washer that wouldn't drain or spin as described in the foregoing. After learning that the lid switch was the likely culprit I discovered I could remove the lid switch from the cabinet without removing the conol or top of the washer. I then discovered that the switch enclosure had largely separated into 2 halves and when pressed together everything began to work correctly. I used a short piece of galvanized wire to wrap around the outside of the lid switch enclosure, reinstalled the switch in the cabinet, and everything is working fine. It took about 10 min. If it stops working again I will just buy a new lid switch.
Thanks for the assistance - it saved a lot of time, effort, and money. CWB

I followed the steps above and got it to work by resetting the safety switch back into place, thanks all for the help but now something else... It ran a full cycle 100% then the next wash it only filled water and died. It doesn't do anything now. Please help

Thank you for this thread. I was about to buy a new washer until I came here. I just wired my switch together and it did the trick! Saved me at least $300.

Agitates on wash cycle fine, gets to drain and spin cycle and does nothing. Lid switch? Or drain pump?

Mine spins but not fast like it used to. The clothes remain wet enough to wring out. Is this fixable?

It was the switch for me as suggested, I put a tie strap around the broken switch to finish the load, but will order a new part for safety's sake. Thank you for the help.
Thanks a lot. The safety switch switchbox had opened up and a piece of electric tape wrapped around fixed it. 5 min repair and the spin & drain works again.
