We want to put in a new bathroom in our basement. The quote we received for putting in the plumbing (which required digging into the concrete slab floor and connecting to the main sewage line) was much higher than we expected. We were wondering if we could avoid this construction by putting the plumbing overhead in the ceiling and using some kind of pump to get it to the main line?

If you want a 1/2 bath there are such things as "upflush" toilets, and you could tap in your sink plumbing into the main soil stack and your home free. However, if you want a tub or shower, and want them at floor level, you've got no choice but to dig down.

It wouldn't hurt to get another quote (or two).
