We recently bought an older home in the City. The home was very well maintained and is essentially a custom brick bungalow in Chicago. My problem is that the basement is a finished basement but there is a very foul odor that eminates from that level. There are open drains scattered throughout and built into the floor of the basement. I believe that the odor comes from them and I was interested to know what I might do to get them cleaned out. The smell makes it difficult to spend meaningful time in what is otherwise a very nice area. I don't want to do anything that will create a toxic effect and backfire, so any advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

Have you tried pouring some water down the drains. It could be that the traps are just dried out and letting the sewer smell come up.
