Also posted this in basements.didn't know whcihwas correct. I have a little giant 1/3 hp sump pump. After 2.5 years it doesnt turn on. I changed the switch under recommendation, and the problem still exists.
It appears that the float doesnt have enough oomph to raise the lever arm to activate the switch. If I assist it with my finger, it will click on. Also when the water is up over the pump, if I rap the pcv pipe comimg up from the pump, it wil turn on

You may have checked this already, but after unplugging pump, see if there is any obstruction to the free movement of the float. Sometimes debris gets in the mechanism and makes the switch difficult to trigger.
