Some times, not too often (3 or 4 times in the last 4 months), the hot water fills the sink up with brownish/tan water. Most of the time its not like this. I had my water softener replaced last October.

It seems if the plumbing was faulty I would see this from the cold water as well.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You can do a search on how to clean and drain-off sediment build-up from the bottom of your HWH. Draining off the sediment will prolong the life of your HWH no matter if it's electric or gas.

I had the very same thing occur when I had an Ice Maker Water line fail at the pipe which I had tapped to supply water to the Ice Maker.

As I had the Ice maker line tapped into a cold water pipe, I am convinced that the hot water tank did not have a back flow valve which would have stopped the hot water from entering the cold water pipe and becoming contaminated. Any other ideas?
