We poured Draino down the tub drain due to slow draining. Now, when we flush the toilet, the tub gurgles. Just a moment ago, my husband flushed and the gurgling began then water and grime began to come up out of the tub drain. The toilet water rose to the top and won't go down. We have another bathroom and aren't having any problems with it (at least not yet). What do we do now? A plumber is so expensive, is there anything we can do ourselves? Thanks for any and all help!!!!!!!1

When one fixture gurgles when another drains, that means the branch to that fixture group is becoming clogged, or the vent is clogged. Whenever you put water into a drain, it pushes the air ahead of it. It has to displace an equal amount of air. Therefore, that air is either diverted up to the roof through the plumbing vent system (a system of pipes to equalize pressures), or down the drain ahead of the water. If either the drain or the vent is partially clogged, it will gurgle up the traps in fixtures. Each trap only has two inches of water inside it, thus it can only prevent pressures less than 1/2 ounce. Any pressure greater will gurgle up as bubbles. Remember, a gallon of water weighs 8.3 pounds.

Good Luck
