I am installing a PTAC in my new garage addition and would like to understand my options as far as installation mounting. The garage has finished drywall and I plan to install the unit sitting on top of the bottom plate. The rough-in dimensions are fairy standard and I will frame it in like a door or window. My question is that does one normally mount the PTAC such that the exterior grill is nearly flush with the outside wall as it is in most hotel installs. This then would require additional support under the indoor portion of the unit. I was considering using addition 2x4's to support rather than the manufacturer supports, BTW.

Or, do you mount the PTAC such that the unit's center of gravity is directly over the bottom plate. In which case more of the unit will protrude further on the exterior wall side. I will be penetrating a normal 2x4 wall with total thickness of 5".

When mounting on the bottom plate, does it really matter other than aesetics? Thanks for your input!
