Central Air Conditioner
The outside unit of my airconditioner (is it called a condenser or a compressor?) will not run although everything else seems to be in order (thermostat, fuses, switch etc.) The house ducts were cleaned in February including the ac filter, and evaporator(?) Can someone advise this widow who's trying to learn everything at once?
Yes the outside unit is called a condensing coil. The unit houses the compressor and fan motor. On the inside of the plenum (sheet metal box on top of the furnace) is where the evaporator coil is located. Check the obvious 1st, which would be the thermostat to make sure it's in the "cooling" mode. Check your circuit breaker and outside near the condensing coil, will be an electrical box. This is called the disconnect. The disconnect might have been switched off, turn it back on if that's the case.
Plumber Tom thank you for your reply. Everything else was in order but I got the outside unit working by turning off the electricity to the whole house and then on again--like rebooting a computer to solve a problem. (My late husband had cancer. He was a Master Plumber and he tried to teach me things, but I was in complete denial and wouldn't listen. I enjoyed your teacher-like response.)
