We have a heat pump - electric furnace combination and with the warmer weather in Ohio we set the thermostat to "off" and the fan to "auto".

The fan doesn't run but there still seems to be some sort of secondary fan running constantly that pushes air through the ducts. If we turn the fan to "on" it is obvious that it is running and a much greater amount of air can be felt coming through.

The thermostat is an ancient Janitrol mercury switch setup and the heat pump and furnace are both about 10 years old.

I have no experience with this whatsoever. What should I check?
