I recently decided to trace back all of my cold air returns to my furnace to see which ones entered where. I pulled out the filter on one side and looked into the return duct with a flashlight. To my surprise I could see the dirt floor of the crawl space underneath my house. The return is completely open to the crawl space underneath my house. I live in Wisconsin and (obviously) it gets very cold here in the winter. The crawl space has vent openings to the outside. It doesn't seem to me that the furnace should be sucking in air at below freezing temperatures from beneath my house, or the dirt in my crawl space. Can somebody tell me if this should be changed? I hope I've explained this understandably.
