I am in the process of purchasing a ONE STORY, 1962 home that is in pretty good shape other than slightly outdated electrical items. I am trying to determine what possible amount I can ask for from the seller to resolve some issues. 2 questions related to electical standards of this era.

1. My inspector noted a fair amount of corrosion at the weatherhead on the roof where the power co's line comes in. He said the line from the weatherhead down (is this called the service drop?) to the breaker box/meter is an Aluminum one and is started to show signs of significant corrosion and will eventually fail.

What is the cost of such a repair? I assume they cut service off and replace the main line from the weatherhead to the breakers with a COPPER one?

2. The house was built just before the switch to 3 prong plugs so all outlets are 2 prong. There does not appear to be any ground available at any of the outlet boxes.

Many suggest to use GFCI to provide some minimal protection. Or GFCI at the first outlet of a curcuit and 3 prong plugs at the others to protect all the outlets in a curcuit. Or GFCIs at all outlets.

I do have some computer equipment that I would like to have true grounded 3 prong plugs for so I assume I will have to just have some new wire run and outlets installed as the safest option.

What is the approximate or range of costs to install a new 3 prong grounded outlet PER OUTLET?

Can this new outlet be added to an existing curcuit or does it have to have it's own?

There are probably 20-25 outlets total in the house. What would be an approximate price for rewiring the entire house. Again, single story with an accessible attic?

thanks in advance,

Tom O

You will need to solicit quotes from several electrical contractors. Prices vary so much from one part of the country to another that any number given to you on this board is likely to be wrong.

Your computer should be served by a new circuit with an equipment ground.
