Hello. I am installing a ceiling fan and the home has separate wall switches for the fan and light. Excluding the ground wire, there are 4 wires coming from the ceiling - 2 black and 2 white (one for each wall switch). There are 3 wires from the fan - 1 black, 1 white, and 1 B&W striped. After I installed it, both wall switches turn on both the light and the fan. Something is obviously wrong. Please help.
the wiring is bit unusuall but we can get it to work.
At the switch
connect all the whites togther in a wire nut.
Connect the power black to 2 pigtails. Connect one of the pigtails to each switch.
Connect the other 2 black wires one each to a switch.
At the the fan
Connect all the white wires with a wire nut.
Connect one black wire the black form the fan.
Connect the other black wire to the blk/wht wire from the fan.
We have an extra white wire from the fan to the switches. If you can identify the wire at both ends you can leave it disconnected. You acatually only one white wire fromthe switches to the fan/light.
