My garage currently has wood siding nailed directly to the studs with no backerboard. I plan to replace the wood siding with vinyl. Any suggestions on what to use as a backerboard to provide a flat surface? Thanks.

i would recommend leaving the wood siding on and just cover it up with 1/4" fanfold styrofoam insulation...it will give you a smooth surface to install your siding over

Mini Me, I hate to disagree however, if you choose to leave on the existing wood, below are several issues you will need to address:

1. Is the existing wood in good shape? If not, REMOVE IT!!!!
2. If you leave it on, will the J-channel on the new siding stick out past the window/door trim? If so, you will then have to build it out, and wrap it in aluminum trim coil, which is not easy for a homeowner.

What I am trying to say is, "It may be a bit more work, but in most cases removing it will be easier in the long run."

Good Luck!
