My husband and I have torn up the old 70's style carpet on the basement floor and it seems that the padding was glued on to the concrete floor.....We have bought some stuff from a flooring store to remove the padding but it did not seem to do anything. Can anyone suggest anything to get this black mess off the floor...We thought maybe renting a sander but we are not sure if that would work. We want to put down ceramic tile but we need to get the padding up first. Any suggestions would be a great help. Thanks!

it sounds like you have a rubber back cpt.(thr rubber is black)or a carpet that was streached in with a pad glued to the floor.if the second the black stuff is cut- back ashesive.you will need to try a few different things, first,a floor scraper,(now you know why the flooring stores charge to pull up your old carpet)sometimes you can put on some boiling water,to help get it loose.once you get up the pad ,you can use an adhesive remover(brand name is jasco,i think) available from home depot at about 23.00 agal.
