I am in the process of having a bathroom re tiled. I would like info on the following:

1. Which method to waterproof the shower floor pan is most effective, hot mopping or using a plastic liner. The original was hot mopped. What are the drawbacks and advantages of each method.

2. For the tile bathroom floor, the tiler wanted to use a mesh wire stapled into the plywood floor, then mud it. There was no waterproof paper placed over the plywood. I wanted the paper over the plywood and then the wire and then the mud. The tiler says this is the way it is done today anf that the mud and wire mesh will form a water proof seal. I want some barrier between the wire and the plywood. What is the best method?

Hot mopping is still done a lot in the western states but the rest of the country has moved over to the liners. Go to www.noblecompany.com to see the liner. I dont know the lifespan of hot mopping but I imagine if done right it would last a long time.

Wire mesh is used with a mud bed to flatten out the floor BUT to do it correctly the mud bed needs to be 1 & 1/4" thick at a minimum at the high spot of the floor. Tar paper is put doewn as a slip sheet but not a water proofing, the staples and or nails used to hold the wire in place literally poke holes in that concept. If the guy just wants to put a scratch coat of mud over the wire, tell him to take a walk, this offers no strength or protection of any kind and this method odf scratch caoting is not recognized by any tile trade association or union training program. It is just cheaping out. Much better to use cement board.

Thanks for the info. I guess the plastic liner is OK.

On the floor, the guy was spreading just enough mud to be even with the wire mesh, about 1/4" thick. The thing I did not like was the mud was in contact with the plywood and I would like the paper to act as a barrier between the mud and the plywood, not so much for water proofing. I think your comment to prevent movement is good.
