I have a small area where the concrete floor has cracked, and is now uneven. The ceramic tiles overlying the area have cracked. These cracked tiles have been removed, and I'd like to replace them. Any suggestions on how to level the prep area so that the replacement tiles won't break? Also, some suggestions on the right adhesive would be appreciated.

There are two kinds of cracks, one where there is a horizontal split. Thuis can be tiled over with the right preparation. The other kind is vertical shear, where one side of the crack is higher than the other. There is nothing made on the market that will prevent the tiles from cracking again if set over a vertical shear crack. Look into other types of flooring if that is what you have.

For a horizontal split, the crack must be covered with a crack isolation membrane. Protecto-Wrap makes a good one, you can google their website. Also Noble Company makes one called CIS. The problem with them is that to function properly they need to span the crack on each side about one and a half times the width of the tile, meaning more would have to come up to fit the sheet in properly. Both are very thin so no height buildup should occur.

Once the membrane is in place a modified thinset should be used to set the tile, comes in a 50 lb bag and gets mixed with water. Dont use anything that is sold in a bucket

also, you may need to grind the high spot in the concrete to get the joints even with the existing tiles accross the gap span you need to resurface.

No tile will last if there is furure movement in the slab, so any repair efforts may need to be repaired again if the slab moves further.

also bob was 100% correct in the need to pull up more tiles and dont forget the crack isolation membrane will add additional height so take that inso consideration in the repair so you can ramp a little with thinset of needed.
