Cordless mowers have come a long way in the last decade, but few brands have risen as quickly or impressed me as much as Ego. The brand’s latest 56V self-propelled mower, model number LM2236SP, doesn’t just keep up with gas-powered performance; it challenges it.

I’ve tested my share of battery mowers, and while many were convenient for routine lawn care, they often fell short on power and runtime. Not the Ego. From the moment I fired it up, this Ego battery-powered lawn mower delivered real muscle, clean cuts, and the kind of lasting performance I typically only see in top-tier gas models.

Quick Setup, Smart Safety

Assembling the Ego Power+ LM2236SP took less than 15 minutes, and after a one-hour charge of the included 56V 6.0Ah battery, it was ready to test.

The self-propulsion engaged immediately, but when I tried to start the blades, nothing happened—until I realized Ego had built in a deliberate two-step safety system.

To engage the blades, the user needs to pull the bail handle back and, while holding it, press the start button with the other hand. The system prevents anyone unfamiliar with the mower, especially children, from accidentally engaging the blades. Once I got the technique down, it became second nature.

Smarter Mowing and Mulching

Changing the cutting height on the Ego LM2236SP is a snap. Instead of fiddling with each wheel separately, this Ego uses a single-point adjustment lever that raises or lowers the entire mowing deck. It took just a second to shift between height settings.

Switching between bagging and mulching was just as seamless. The grass collection bag had a solid, secure feel when I attached and detached it. When I wanted to mulch instead, I simply slid the integrated mulch lever. There’s no mulch plug to fumble with or lose.

User-friendly details like these made mowing feel smoother and less like a chore.

  • Attaching grass clipping bag
  • Inserting battery
  • Mowing with the EGO
  • Control panel
  • Headlights for mowing in dim situations
  • Another view of light headlight path
  • EGO 56V mower mowing
  • Underside of the EGO mower
  • Closeup of front panel
  • Cutting a clean sharp swath
  • Thumb-leer accelerator

Adjustable Speed for Precision Cutting

The Ego mower’s self-propulsion system is fully adjustable. I was able to slow the pace for mowing around garden beds and obstacles, and then speed up to a brisk 3.1 miles per hour for open stretches of lawn.

Blade speed is also adjustable, which is a feature that few cordless mowers offer. I kept it on the higher setting for a cleaner, sharper cut, especially through dense patches of fescue. Combined with a 22-inch cutting deck, these adjustments allowed me to mow larger areas in less time without sacrificing cut quality or battery efficiency.

The Difference Is in the Details

One feature I didn’t expect but appreciated was built-in headlights. I tested them just after the sun had set, and they illuminated the mowing path clearly, making it easy to spot garden hoses and dropped dog toys.

While I don’t plan to mow after dark, having extra visibility in case conditions change—whether it’s unexpectedly late evenings, cloudy weather, or shaded areas—adds a degree of convenience that many may find handy.

After weeks of testing, the Ego 56V LM2236SP has earned a permanent spot in my lawncare lineup. If you’re looking for a cordless mower that performs like a gas model but skips the noise, fumes, and hassle, this is an easy choice.
